What to look for in a dog-friendly lodge in Essex

A "pets welcome" badge is not the same as a stay that actually works with a dog. The difference shows in the details.

Enclosed outdoor space matters most. At Brook Lodge in Wakes Colne, the verandah wraps around three sides of the lodge and is fully enclosed and secure, so a dog can be out the door without anyone worrying about roads or livestock. The Cartlodge outside Rochford sits on a full acre of enclosed garden with room for ball games and off-lead running. Longridge in Peldon has a lawned garden with enough flat grass for a dog to stretch out properly, fenced and private.

Walking from the door matters almost as much. Gladwyns Farm Lodge near Thaxted has a gate at the back of the garden that opens straight onto footpaths across open farmland, with deer at dawn, hares in the hedgerow, and red kites circling above. Brook Lodge and Woodbell Lodge sit on the same estate in the Colne Valley, with trails running through woodland and meadow, past the fishing lake and willow plantation, before winding back towards the village. At both, the car tends to stay parked for the duration.

The number of dogs allowed varies. Brook Lodge takes up to three, which is generous for a one-bedroom lodge. Some properties accept one, others are more flexible. Check the individual listing before booking, as the rules depend on the property.

Welcome packs and dog-specific extras vary between properties. Outdoor washing areas, towels left by the door for muddy returns, and dog beds or bowls are common across the pet-friendly lodges, though they are not universal.

Dog-friendly walks and days out across Essex

Essex offers more for dogs and their owners than most people expect. The county runs from ancient forest in the west to tidal estuaries and sandy beaches on the coast, with open farmland and quiet villages connecting the two.

For countryside walks, the Colne Valley and Uttlesford are hard to beat. The footpaths around Wakes Colne wind through farmland and woodland with barely another walker in sight. Near Thaxted, the fields and lanes stretch out in every direction, with the Essex Way long-distance path passing close by. Dedham Vale, on the Essex-Suffolk border, has miles of footpaths through the landscape Constable painted and along the River Stour.

For coastal walks, the Tendring coast and Mersea Island both work well with a dog. Mersea has a dog-friendly beach, seafood sheds along the waterfront, and shore walks that are good in any season. The Blackwater Estuary is quieter still, with saltmarsh walks, birdwatching hides, and footpaths along the water's edge. Further up the coast, the stretch from Brightlingsea through St Osyth to Walton-on-the-Naze has sandy beaches, cliff-top paths, and the kind of wide-open space a dog lives for.

Most Essex villages work well with a dog. Pubs in Dedham, Finchingfield, Thaxted, and Saffron Walden welcome dogs inside or in the garden. Country cafes and farm shops are usually the same.
