Mark and Sylvia live close by and tend to be there on arrival, walking you through the barn, the garden, and the hot tub before leaving you to settle in. The barn is in the Tendring district, the stretch of north Essex coast that runs from Clacton through St Osyth, Brightlingsea, and up to Walton-on-the-Naze. The nearest beach is St Osyth, roughly five miles from the door, with its own sandy stretch and a quieter feel than Clacton next door.
Clacton has the pier, the promenade, and the kind of traditional seaside day out that works well for children who want arcades and fish and chips. Colchester is twenty minutes inland, with the castle, the zoo, and one of the oldest town centres in Britain. Further up the coast, West Mersea is worth a full day for the seafood, the beach huts in their pastel rows, and the walk along the shore. Dedham Vale is half an hour's drive, and the route north through Manningtree and Nayland makes the journey part of the day out.
